Bombe-tastic beginnings
Project: Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery, 9 Penang Road
For most circuit bakers during the pandemic, home kitchens were the modus operandi. But for Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery, the soaring demand for their sourdough bombolinis called for a dedicated production kitchen and retail space.
Above all, the client envisioned a brand with a fun, vibrant personality, that matched its handcrafted gourmet bakes.
Our design approach focused on three key considerations — business needs, customer experience, and the brand’s core identity. We partitioned the shop into two distinct areas, the back-of-house hot kitchen for prep work and heavy-duty baking, and the front-of-house cold kitchen for bombolini assembly. Upon entering, customers are greeted by the cold pastry selection, followed by a 6-meter-long pastry display. Along this journey, they’d witness the pastry chefs piping bombolinis, thereby emphasizing freshness while sparking curiosity and desire.
The brand colours involved bright vibrant hues like watermelon pink and cobalt blue. However, to keep the focus on the pastries, we opted for more subdued variations. For a touch of sophistication, we chose "Red Spider" natural marble with red veins and light pink undertones. The blues were represented through custom-ordered bespoke tiles from Winckelmans for the cold demo kitchen. This intentional design ensures efficient operations and cohesive visual identity, while allowing customers to fully immerse themselves in a bombe-tastic pastry experience.
